Article on Leo Baxter, SA quad intending to walk again…

Thanks to Wendy Greenway for suggesting a link to this article in Maverick Magazine…

Not going to not walk

Leo Baxter and Christopher Reeve have one thing in common. They both broke their necks falling off their horses. That’s where the similarity ends. Baxter has no intention of leaving this planet anytime soon. Instead, he’s marshalled his dogged determination, quick mind and plenty of courage in a strategic plan to get back on his feet by 2010.

A huge component of the plan is medical, scientific and technological advances. Money and resources are vital. None of this is much use, however, if you don’t have the will to live or if you settle for spending life in a wheelchair. The latter is the norm.

Medical Update 9am Monday

Apologies for the delay in this update.

Dr Moeng says that Tom has responded well again to the infection challenge in his lung, and whilst it has not cleared completely yet, it is clearing.

Obviously last week’s infection was another setback to the ventilation weaning, so Tom is now back on the C-pap level of ventilation, and the doctor says they will progress him slowly along the weaning path now.

They are doing a sonic scan to check for any deep vein thrombosis (no suspicion of such, just a precaution) today or tomorrow.

Otherwise his food absorption is going well, as are his other vital functions.

On a non-medical matter – Jane’s wondering if any of you know anyone sufficiently high up at KLM to assist with a flight change. She’s been able to delay her departure once already with a letter from the doc, but policies are prohibiting any further alterations. If you know a good contact, please mail me at nick@classicfm.co.za?

Thanks!
