New Pictures Function

Tony has found a solution to our little hacker problem, and I think this will end up being a better way to render pictures on the site anyway.

We’ve opened a Flickr account for Tom (a third-party web site that you can store your pics on), so we’ll be keeping all the pics remotely. If you want to go there directly you’ll find Tom’s Photostream here.

You are able to load pictures there yourself, and they will appear as thumbnail-sized images in the box you’ll now see in the right hand column.

Tony’s instructions for how you can upload yourself are below (and found permanently in the “Pictures” tab above). Thanks again to him for being our trusty IT guy at a time when his day job is at its busiest! If you loaded a pic before but don’t see it there, please could you help us by uploading as per below?

Australia’s Show Of Strength!

Inspired by England’s Show of Strength, Australia will follow suit and have similar events across Aussie cities.  We’re calling on all people who live in Australia, and know Tom, to come together for an Australian Show of Strength. Again, please note that this is not a fundraising event, though all monies collected will be put toward the cost of a “standing wheelchair” for Tom.  The Aussies will keep track of the number of kilometres travelled to see if we can beat England?  Bring your family and friends and come and join Australia’s Show of Strength for Tom.  Along the way we’ll be breathing and smiling with and for our friend.

Current locations and full details available below…. Read the rest of this entry »

Out!

I’m out  of hospital and this feels marvelous!  All my wishes are for Tom to soon move out of Milpark on the next stage of his long journey. This is a quick entry to let family and friends know that I am OK and slowly beginning to walk again.  All those who have struggled to keep up with my fast pace in the past, will find a new slowness, in fact at the moment a sort of 99-year-old type shuffle for a few steps and then the wheelchair! In spite of being horribly difficult, its also a useful learning for me, both the hospital and now my forced immobility.  What had not been obvious at first was a fracture in my pelvis and this, though much less dramatic than either the shoulder or wrist, is by far the most difficult injury for me.

Its all very minor when I think of Tom.

In particular and as usual I wish to record the brilliant support  I have received since this accident. Thank you and thank you….!  Sally was magnificient backed by Lizzie Moon. Then Robert ,who leapt aboard a plane from London (very unlikely behaviour!) Chris Moon, Lelong, Vivienne who travelled to see me for a very different weekend than we had planned, Grant and Trevlyn, Kevin and James my loving and stalwart nephews ready for anything, Barbara M., Nick and Kerry kind and steady and helping in a myriad ways, my beloved children in the UK supporting me by phone, and friends all over, Mona, Barbara V., Jacquie, Sarah, Fatima and Bharat, Elizabeth ….. and many others and I am fading and forgetting,  but thank you all for your love and backing.

Not least, I’ d like to back-up Nick’s post on not visiting Tom for now and make a request.  My sense is that rest is crucial at present. This is a critical time for him in staying off the vent. For now, instead of visiting perhaps, if you wish,  post him a message on this website.  He likes this a lot. Or perhaps write a poem….or draw a picture.  When visitors come, Tom rises to this and there is a cost to him. A nurse took Tom’s  Dad aside and said when vistors are there he is bright, but when they leave he is “too tired”.

Wheelchair request – Sorted!

Thanks to Grant and Trevlyn Molyneux for sorting out a wheelchair for Jane! We’re hopeful she’ll be out Tuesday or Wednesday and this will be a tremendous help for her.

Help, as always, close at hand.

No Visitors Please

Hi, A quick request from Jane and Sal is to perhaps suspend visiting for a few days while Tom regains his strength off the ventilator. It’s a critical time and it’s possible the effort of speaking to everyone who drops by might leave him susceptible to another setback.

The ICU front desk have been asked to tell visitors not to come till further notice. Please lets give him a few day’s space?

Many thanks for your understanding.

Nokia, You Beauts!

The headline being my Saffa attempt to credit the Antipodean branch of the great Finnish cell company who as of next week will be responsible for connecting Tom to the world outside the ICU once again.

This thanks to Jonathan Jackson, who works for Nokia in Sydney, and Jonathan’s wife Katrina (nee Marshall) who was friends with Tom at Rhodes. Jonathan not only identified the most appropriate phone for Tom’s condition, but got Nokia to donate it, with a Bluetooth headset for good measure.

The phone is a brand new model and will arrive with Tessa who flies out from Brisbane to see Tom and Sal next week. It’s unlikely he’ll be allowed to use it till he’s in rehab, but I’m looking forward to setting it up and getting him to try out his first hands-free call. It will be another massive moment.

Neither Jonathan nor Nokia requested any acknowledgement of this incredibly generous gift. I shall hereby ignore them and paste this big, bold logo onto this site for all to see, and consider when next deciding on a brand of cell phone… Good on You! :P

The sun shines brighter…

My phone rang this morning and Bren said I’ll put the phone up to Tom’s ear for a couple of minutes, ok.  “Hi Babe, how are you?” I think I said………  “Hi, its me”  he said back LOUD AND CLEAR.  What a wonderful surprise to hear his voice.  The smaller tube had been inserted and capped which means he has his voice back.  He does find it tiring to speak and breath but it was him alright.

Its a good day. My heart is still pounding.

Jane’s Progress

I’ve just spoken to Jane who has summarised her situation with the words “things are difficult, but looking up.”

She’s still a little nauseous, though this seems to be subsiding, with her main inconvenience being the difficulty she’s having moving her lower body out of bed. She’s been seeing the physio though who she really likes and who has been very helpful. The doctor also told me yesterday that he felt her relative immobility was probably normal considering the extent of her fall, and would subside with the swelling.

Medically then, she is recovering largely as expected, though obviously it is enormously frustrating for her to not be up and about.

Robert arrived last night late, and is about to see her this morning, so that will be a great comfort. She will probably be in Morningside for another couple of days – the weekend at least.

As if to remind us of the occasional superfluous errands of medical science, Jane told me that a physician had checked out her heart and declared it to be “perfect”. We could have told him that.

Sunshine!

Nothing tells the news of the day better than these… even if they were taken on a dodgy old camera phone!

No parking for helicopters for an hour please

No parking for helicopters for an hour please

What a momentous day for Tom. I was walking into the hospital when I recognised Chris by a bed parked where the choppers land. And there he was! Tom’s first time in the sun for 11 weeks, and he LOVED it!

It is an appropriate time to take the first post-accident pics for public consumption. Taking them in the grey dingy light of the ICU never seemed like a good idea.

Tom’s Physio is on the right of his bed, and she said he’s doing really well with the breathing. She is pushing the doctors to try fenustrate him again in the next day or so. Lets hope they agree with her!

So much to say, but the pictures say it better.

England’s Show of Strength!

Calling all people in the UK and surrounds who know Tom, or who have been touched by his plight – we are organising a Show of Strength for Tom on Saturday 12th September 2009, in London.

Meeting in Richmond Park around 9:30am, bring your kids, parents, grandparents, friends and who ever else you want – grab a bike, a pair of walking shoes, roller blades, wheelchair, zimmer frame – and join us for a great, fun, fab family day out.  This event is a chance for us to finally DO SOMETHING for Tom – we want to show him and the family how much they mean to us.  This is not a fundraising event, though all monies collected, and any other monetary donations you may want to submit, will be contributed toward the cost of a “standing wheelchair”.

Entry donations are £15 for a family of four, and £5 for an individual entry. If you’ve spent your last penny getting to London that’s also fine, as long as you’re prepared to be seconded as a marshal or time-keeper, or as the event photographer!

Tom is travelling along a tough path.  He has an almighty journey ahead of him.  We plan to physically travel along a part of this journey.  With our love and support, he and his family WILL get through this.

We want everyone, no matter how young or old, fit or otherwise, to take part.  A short circuit in Richmond Park can be travelled by all – if you want to do all or part of the circuit, you are very welcome.  Those who want to extend themselves and stretch further can join us on the 50 to 80km cycle ride around the Richmond circuit and out into London and beyond!

While you wait for the mildly insane to return from the 50 to 80km cycle, tuck into your picnic lunch and enjoy the company of great people, surrounded by the spectacular grounds of the park.

Ideas of T Shirt printing are also in the pipeline – does anyone know where we can get T Shirts done for a great rate?

So bring your family, bring a picnic, bring your friends, bring your bike (or other mode of transport!) and bring anything else that you may need … and join us for a lovely day in the park.

Please leave a message on this site or contact Lyn lynstrydom@aol.com or Gretta gretta.mackenzie@sky.com if you want to register for the event.

We need names …. we need numbers … we need your support.

See you at Richmond on the 12th September at 9.30am. An additional map site available here.
